MAS has always shown its compassion towards society, but this time it is directed towards helping animals. On Saturday 21st, MAS embarked on its very first trip to The Humane Center for Animal Welfare; a group of our best students set aside their plans for the weekend to help and show some love to the animals. The center warmly welcomed and gave us a tour around the building; in return the generous MAS family donated items that were needed for the animals. There were all sorts of animals, and a story behind each one. We saw a lot of hawks that were permanently injured due to hunting. Seeing these poor creatures made us all understand what kind of horrible activities we as humans do in order to have fun. Not only did this trip raise awareness about the different issues concerning animals in Jordan, but we also learned a lot about training and looking after all the animals. We were given information about the different diet each species had, and also how to take care of it.
The most touching part was meeting the heroic animals that lived to tell a story about the terrible abuse they’ve been through. Abiad was a handicapped dog who had been shot, and as a result he could no longer walk on all fours. He had to be put in a special animal wheelchair which helped him move and do his daily exercise. Zorro, a small Chihuahua, had his leg ran over by a car leaving him with only three left. Although his owners abandoned him, the animal center kept and looked after him. This volunteer work involved folding towels, feeding animals, and petting them. The best part was when the nurses from the center brought cute puppies, kittens, hamsters and bunnies for all of us to pet. The project will continue next semester with more regular visits and hopefully adoptions. There is no doubt that the students enjoyed and look forward to this volunteer work in the New Year.
